Windshield Repair Service Video

A windshield chip or short crack can often be repaired with clear resin that bonds to the glass and stops the damage from spreading. Once a crack grows too long or reaches the driver's line of sight, repair is no longer an option and the glass has to be replaced.

This video shows what a repairable chip looks like next to damage that has already gone too far. It also walks through the repair itself, from cleaning the impact point to curing the resin under UV light.

During a repair, the chip is cleaned and a small bridge is set over it to draw air out of the break. Resin is then pushed into every tiny fracture and hardened with a curing lamp. The repair is not always invisible, but it stops the crack from running.

A chip smaller than a quarter or a crack shorter than about three inches is usually repairable, especially outside the driver's view. Bullseye chips, star breaks, and combination breaks all respond well when the damage is fresh and clean. Windshield checks are part of our preventive maintenance service, where small problems are caught before they grow.

A chip that has collected dirt or moisture for weeks is harder to fill cleanly. That is why acting on new damage quickly gives you the best chance at a repair.

At Spectra Auto Services, our technicians can look over the windshield during a free multi-point inspection. You get DVI photos of any chips or cracks, so you can see the damage and decide on next steps before it spreads.

The windshield and wipers are also part of the Maryland safety inspection required when a vehicle changes owners. Our Maryland State Vehicle Inspection checks the glass against the state's standards.

Frederick County's cold winters can cause a small windshield chip to spread into a long crack. When the defroster blows hot air onto cold glass, uneven heating creates stress that can cause the existing damage to expand. Drivers from Urbana and Brunswick often see a chip spread across the glass on the first frosty morning.
