Radiator Service Video

The radiator is the heat exchanger that keeps your engine within its operating temperature. Coolant absorbs heat from the engine block and flows through the radiator's thin tubes and fins. Air passing through the radiator core removes the heat before the coolant returns to the engine.

This video walks through where the radiator sits, how the cap regulates pressure, and how the hoses carry coolant between the engine and the core. Under normal operation, the thermostat opens once the engine reaches temperature, and the water pump pushes coolant through the loop continuously.

Failure usually shows up as a slow coolant loss, a sweet smell after driving, or a temperature gauge that climbs in traffic. Green, orange, or pink coolant residue around the radiator seams or beneath the front of the vehicle can indicate a leak. Common causes include a leaking radiator end tank, a cracked plastic tank, or a loose hose clamp.

Years of repeated heating and cooling can make a radiator's plastic end tanks brittle. Frederick's cold winter temperatures can worsen the damage, causing hairline cracks along the seams when the cooling system builds pressure. A proper inspection pressure-tests the system, checks the cap's rated pressure, and looks for internal blockage that starves the core of flow.

When testing points to the radiator itself, our radiator repair and replacement service covers the full scope of what the job involves. Drivers from Walkersville and Urbana visit Spectra Auto Services when they notice a rising temperature gauge or coolant pooling beneath the front of their vehicle. Our technicians pressure-test the radiator to identify leaks before the engine overheats.

If your temperature gauge is climbing or you spot coolant under the car, call (301) 695-5990, or visit Spectra Auto Services in Frederick to have the radiator inspected before it strands you.
