Power Steering Pump Service Video

The power steering pump is a belt-driven hydraulic pump that pressurizes fluid so the steering rack can turn the wheels with less driver effort. It runs anytime the engine is running, and the pressure it builds is what makes low-speed maneuvers feel light instead of heavy.

This power steering pump video shows where the pump sits on the engine and explains how the drive belt spins its internal vanes. It also shows how the pump sends pressurized fluid through the hoses to the steering rack. In normal operation, the reservoir feeds the pump, and a return line carries the fluid back once the rack has used it.

Wear usually shows up first as a whine that rises with engine speed, heaviest when turning at low speed or parking. A gradual drop in the power steering fluid level or a pink puddle near the front of the engine can indicate a leak. Steering that feels uneven or notchy in one direction may also signal a problem with the pump or its seals.

Cold Frederick winters thicken power steering fluid overnight, and repeatedly forcing cold fluid through a worn pump accelerates seal and bearing wear. At Spectra Auto Services, our technicians check the power steering fluid condition and inspect the pump shaft for leaks. We also test system pressure to determine whether the problem comes from the pump, hoses, or steering rack.

When testing confirms the pump is the source, our suspension, steering and wheel services team walks through the full repair scope. Drivers from Walkersville and Urbana bring us a whining pump so we can test it before the steering goes heavy.

If your steering has started whining or feels heavier than it used to, call (301) 695-5990 or visit the best auto repair in Frederick to have the pump inspected.
