Power Steering Fluid Service Video
Power steering fluid is the hydraulic medium that lets a pump push pressurized oil into the steering rack, multiplying the force you put into the wheel. Without it, turning the wheel at low speed becomes heavy work the driver has to muscle through alone.
This power steering fluid video shows where the reservoir sits and compares healthy fluid with fluid that has darkened over time. It also explains how the pump circulates fluid through the high-pressure lines to the steering rack while the engine runs.
Warning signs usually show up before a full failure. A groan or whine when turning at low speed points to air or low fluid in the pump. Stiff steering, foamy fluid, or a burnt smell means the fluid has degraded and lost its ability to lubricate the internal vanes.
Stop-and-go driving and tight parking around Frederick put extra strain on the power steering pump and generate heat in the fluid. Over time, this heat can darken the fluid and break down the additives that protect the pump and steering rack. An inspection at Spectra Auto Services checks fluid level, color, and condition, and pressure-tests the hoses and rack for weeping seals.
When the fluid or a hydraulic component needs attention, schedule an inspection through our suspension, steering, and wheel service to get a full assessment. Drivers from Walkersville and Urbana come to Spectra Auto Services when the wheel groans on a tight turn, so we can check the fluid before the pump runs dry.
If your steering feels heavy or noisy, call (301) 695-5990 or visit your Frederick car care team to have the system checked.
