Differential Repair Service Video
The differential is the gearset that lets your drive wheels turn at different speeds when you take a corner. It receives power from the driveshaft and splits it between the axles, which is what keeps the inside wheel from dragging every time you turn.
This video walks through where the differential sits under the vehicle and what a worn one looks like once the ring and pinion start to load unevenly. In normal operation, the gears run submerged in heavy gear oil, and the bearings hold everything in tight alignment while torque passes through.
Wear usually shows up as sound before anything else. A whine that changes pitch with vehicle speed points to the ring and pinion. A clunk when you shift from drive to reverse points to worn spider gears or excessive backlash inside the case.
On cold Frederick County mornings, thick gear oil is slow to coat the ring and pinion, so the gears run with less protection until the differential warms. An inspection at Spectra Auto Services, 324 N East St, checks the fluid for metal, measures backlash, and listens for bearing noise on a road test.
When testing confirms the differential needs attention, our transmission, drivetrain and clutch service covers the full repair process. Drivers from Walkersville and Urbana bring their vehicles to us for drivetrain work.
If you hear a whine or clunk from under the vehicle, call Spectra Auto Services at (301) 695-5990, or visit the best auto repair in Frederick to schedule an inspection.
