Camshaft Service Video
The camshaft opens and closes your engine's intake and exhaust valves in step with the pistons. It turns at half the speed of the crankshaft, driven by a timing belt or chain. When its lobes, bearings, or position sensor wear out, the engine loses the timing it needs to run smoothly.
This video shows where the camshaft sits inside the engine and how its lobes push the valves open. It also sets a worn lobe next to a healthy one, so you can see how a rounded profile cuts valve lift.
As the camshaft turns, its egg-shaped lobes press on lifters or rocker arms to open each valve at the right moment. A position sensor reports the cam's location to the engine computer, which uses it to time fuel and spark. Camshaft testing is part of our engine diagnostics service, where sensor data and mechanical wear are checked together.
A ticking or tapping sound from the top of the engine is often the first clue, especially if it grows louder as RPM climbs. Worn lobes stop lifting the valves the full distance, which changes the sound of the valvetrain.
A check engine light with a P0340 or related camshaft position code points to the sensor or the ring it reads. Rough idle, hard starting, and lost power often come with these codes.
At Spectra Auto Services, we start with a scan and a listen. Your DVI report shows the codes, freeze-frame data, and photos of what we find once the valve cover comes off. Every repair is backed by warranties on parts and labor, so the camshaft work is covered after you drive off.
If the timing belt is due at the same mileage, it makes sense to handle both while the front of the engine is open. Our timing belt and chain replacement service covers the belt, tensioner, and cam seals in one job.
On cold Frederick County mornings, oil may take a few extra seconds to reach the cam lobes at the top of the engine. Over time, repeated cold starts can contribute to cam lobe wear. Drivers from Middletown and Mount Airy bring their vehicles to us when a valvetrain tick will not go away.
If you hear ticking from the top of your engine, call Spectra Auto Services at (301) 695-5990, or visit your trusted mechanic in Frederick, MD to book a camshaft diagnosis.
