Fuel Pump Service Video
The fuel pump moves gasoline from the tank to the injectors at the pressure the engine computer expects. When it weakens, the engine cranks longer, stumbles under load, or cuts out on a hill or merges.
This video shows where the pump sits inside the tank on most modern vehicles and how its pressure and current draw are tested. It also shows what a failing pump looks like on a scan tool.
Most cars carry the pump inside the fuel tank, where the gasoline around it keeps the motor cool. It spins an impeller that pushes fuel through a strainer and up the line to the injectors. Pump testing is part of our engine diagnostics service, which traces fuel delivery problems to their real cause.
Long cranking in the morning is often the first sign. A check valve inside the pump is letting pressure bleed back into the tank overnight, so the line has to refill before the engine will start.
Hesitation when you accelerate, a whine from the rear of the vehicle, or a stall at highway speed all point the same way. A pump that cannot hold pressure under heavy demand starves the injectors and can set misfire codes.
At Spectra Auto Services, our technicians perform a full fuel pressure and volume test before replacing any components. A weak fuel pump and a clogged fuel filter can cause similar symptoms, so accurate testing helps us identify the problem. Your DVI report shows the readings next to factory specifications. When the pump does need replacing, pressure and fuel trims are checked again before the vehicle goes home.
On many vehicles, a pump replacement is a good time to clean the rest of the fuel system. Our fuel system repair and cleaning service covers injector cleaning and high-pressure pump service on direct-injection engines.
Vehicles around Frederick County that sit unused for weeks between drives may experience premature fuel pump failure. Over time, moisture and deposits in ethanol-blended fuel can contribute to corrosion and wear on the pump's internal components. Drivers from Brunswick and Walkersville often bring us a slow-starting second car for exactly this reason.
If your engine is slow to start or stalls under load, call Spectra Auto Services at (301) 695-5990, or visit your Frederick auto shop to have the fuel pump tested.
