Catalytic Converter Service Video
The catalytic converter is the emissions control device built into your exhaust system. Inside its metal shell, a honeycomb coated with platinum, palladium, and rhodium turns harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones before they leave the tailpipe.
This video walks through how the converter works and where the oxygen sensors sit in relation to it. Those sensors read exhaust content before and after the honeycomb so the engine computer can confirm the converter is actually doing its job during normal driving.
Failure rarely happens all at once. Sluggish throttle response, a rotten-egg smell from the tailpipe, or a rattling noise underneath the vehicle while idling can indicate a failing catalytic converter. A check engine light with a P0420 code may also point to reduced converter efficiency or an oxygen sensor problem. These symptoms require further testing to identify the exact cause.
Frederick’s cold winters often mean more short trips that prevent the catalytic converter from reaching its operating temperature. As a result, unburned fuel can pass through and leave deposits on the converter’s honeycomb structure instead of burning off properly. At Spectra Auto Services, our technicians inspect the catalytic converter for physical damage and scan live sensor data. We then determine whether the problem comes from the converter, the oxygen sensors, or an underlying engine issue.
Once testing narrows down the source, our catalytic converter repair and replacement service covers the full process. Drivers from Walkersville and Urbana visit Spectra Auto Services when they notice a P0420 code or a rotten-egg smell. Our technicians diagnose the issue to determine whether the catalytic converter is failing or an oxygen sensor is faulty.
If you hear a rattle underneath or notice a check engine light, call Spectra Auto Services at (301) 695-5990, or visit your Frederick car care team to have an exhaust inspection.
