Brake Caliper Service Video
The brake caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to slow your vehicle. Hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder pushes one or more pistons inside the caliper, which forces the pads into contact with the spinning rotor.
This video walks through where the caliper sits over the rotor and how the piston, slide pins, and pads work together each time you press the pedal. In normal operation, the pads release cleanly once you lift off the brake, letting the rotor spin freely again.
Caliper trouble tends to show up as uneven braking or heat. A vehicle that pulls to one side under braking often has a piston that is not retracting. A rotor that stays hot or smells scorched after a short drive points to a pad that is dragging on it.
Road salt used during Frederick County winters can get into brake caliper slide pins and piston boots. Over time, corrosion can cause the pins to seize, making one brake pad wear much faster than the other. An inspection checks piston movement, slide pin travel, boot integrity, and pad wear across both sides of the axle.
When testing confirms the caliper is the source, schedule a brake inspection to see the full repair process. Walkersville and Urbana drivers bring us brakes that pull or run hot, and we trace it to a seized caliper before the rotor is scored past saving.
If you notice pulling, dragging, or heat from one wheel, call (301) 695-5990, or visit the best auto repair in Frederick to have the caliper checked before it damages the rotor.
