Wheel Bearings Service Video

Wheel bearings sit inside each wheel hub and let the wheel spin smoothly under the weight of the vehicle. They carry both the load of the car and the side forces of every turn. A failing bearing usually makes noise long before it becomes a safety problem, which gives you time to fix it.

This video shows what a healthy bearing looks like and what a worn one sounds like on a lift. It also shows how play is checked with the wheel off the ground.

A wheel bearing is a sealed set of hardened steel balls or rollers riding on smooth races. It is built to a tight tolerance so the wheel spins freely with no side-to-side play. Bearing checks are part of our suspension, steering, and wheel service, which includes wheel bearing play in every suspension inspection.

Most modern vehicles use a bolt-on hub unit, where the bearing and hub are replaced together. Older designs use a pressed-in bearing that needs a shop press to remove and install.

A low hum or growl from one corner that changes pitch with speed is the classic warning sign. The sound often gets louder in a turn, as the weight shifts onto the failing side. The second sign is play: if the tire rocks when you push and pull at the top and bottom, a worn bearing is a likely cause, though ball joints can feel similar.

At Spectra Auto Services, our technicians check each hub for play and roughness with the wheel off the ground. You get DVI photos of what they find before any work is approved. They also confirm the noise is the bearing and not a tire or brake part since those can sound alike.

On a pressed-in bearing, the steering knuckle often comes off during the repair, which can shift the wheel angles. Our wheel alignment service checks and resets those angles once the new bearing is in.

After a heavy summer storm in Frederick County, driving through standing water can rapidly cool a hot wheel bearing. If the bearing has a worn seal, water can enter and cause corrosion and pitting on the internal bearing races. Drivers from Brunswick and Middletown often notice the hum starting a few weeks later.

If you hear a hum or growl that changes with speed, call Spectra Auto Services at (301) 695-5990, or visit your Frederick car care  team to have your wheel bearings checked.
