These pictures are of an engine with only 67,000 miles on it. As you can see, it is filled with oil sludge and carbon. This is the result of not changing the oil often enough. The engine is now burning a quart of oil every week due to excess wear and sludge build up. There is also a high probability that this engine will suffer other breakdowns or problems. The minimum cost of repairs at this point is $1800. If the oil were changed every 3,000 miles at an average cost of $30 per oil change, the total cost of the oil changes would have only been $660, only one third the cost of the repairs. As you can see from this example it is much cheaper in the long run to change your oil every 3,000 miles.
